Ever Vigilant

“Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come.

Mark 13:33 (NIV)

Jesus talks about being vigilant because you won’t know when He will return.  He uses several parables to get the job done.  Brian from the Daily Audio Bible, talked about this when he read about it in the book of Mark.  Jesus wants our eyes focused on Him as much as we can.  When we do so things are better, in good times and in bad.  He is our comfort and He is rock.

As human beings with short attention spans as it is how do we do that.  And its one of my goals for this year. To be more mindful of God throughout my day.  So I need some sort of attentional cue or cues to help.  I have already talked about reminders on my phone and routines that I have, but wanted to talk about another way.

Remember, those W.W.J.D bracelets that a lot of people wore some years ago.  These are a great example of a something that can orient you to Jesus.  You put it on in the morning, look at it during the day, maybe play with it.  In each instance the idea is that you start to think how Christ would handle situations as well as just think about Him.  You don’t see many of those around today.

I wear a cross.  There are times when I am very aware that it is on.  I remember holding on to it when my wife was in the emergency room a few years ago before our daughter was born.  I was praying hard and the cross brought me peace, because it put my focus on God and I knew my wife would be okay.  Days I leave the house without it I feel somewhat off.  It’s another way that I try to be vigilant.

Much like I talked about in the post on routines.  These things can lose their effect if we don’t pay attention to them.  Probably why you don’t see many W.W.J.D bracelets anymore.  But that’s not on the cues.  That’s on us.  That’s us being foolish.

Five of them were foolish and five were sensible.  When the foolish took their lamps, they didn’t take olive oil with them. But the sensible ones took oil in their flasks with their lamps.

Matthew 25:2-4 (HCSB)
