Physical Goals: For Right Now

So as I work toward my goals its always a best practice to write them down.  I got into this to be able to be a Functional Dad and have been thinking about what that needs to look like.  The question is how to quantifiably measure the abilities I want in order to meet that goal.  Big words I know.  Bottom line, how do I know if I have achieved what I set out to do.  It was easy set a goal and to train for a triathlon or 5K race.  I want to finish at a certain time and would do the requisite distance work, interval training and weight work to achieve those goals.  Its harder when there is no competition or clear physical marker.

This will likely be a work in progress, and all effective goals are reviewed and updated regularly.
But here goes – making the abstract objective:
The first question is what are the physical requirements a father has to perform in a day.  The simplest will be holding my daughter and able to pick her up.  She will most likely way between 6 and 8 lb. immediately after birth but that is going to change in pretty short order.  So I can’t just train to be able to do that with 10 lb.  Another is being able to muscle the car seat, stroller, and other baby stuff in and out of the car and around the house.  As she gets older and more mobile I am gonna have to be fast and light on my feet to head off any potential dangerous situations she may get into.  Not that I am going to be one of those helicopter parents but there are some things that can potentially be hazardous.  And I want to be able to do all this without throwing out my back, without straining/spraining anything, and without (heaven forbid) breaking any bones.  I am not as young as I used to be and while I am in okay shape it takes my body a little longer to recuperate from an injury.  And I do have a couple of nagging physical injuries from my younger days (e.g. shoulder sprain from flight school and a hip injury from snowboarding) that pop back up from time to time, especially when I haven’t stretched appropriately.

And there you have it.  Injury prevention is probably my main goal.  Its not sexy but that is what it boils down to.
